Fully equiped with new wellies and waterproofs, students from the Freebrough Academy Hub have been busy in the village of Brotton planting winter pansies in the flower boxes at the graveyard. The planters were originally designed and made by students who attended the Friday@Freebrough youth club and donated to the Brotton Improvement Group. Our students now regularly plant seasonal flowers in them and they continue to be maintained by both members of BIG and the students of Freebrough Academy.

On Thursday 28 February 2013 nine students educated at the newly opened Enterprise@Freebrough post 16 centre pitched for real life investment from UK steel Enterprise.

The students are all currently studying for a Peter Jones Enterprise Academy Level 3 qualification in Enterprise and Entrepreneurship, alongside another course of their choice. As part of this qualification the students have to set up and run a real business.

All of the students delivered a pitch to Peter Taylor and Simon Hamilton from UK Steel Enterprise to try to secure a grant to help them with the start-up costs of their business. They were able to seek investment funds to help them to buy stock, access training courses or produce marketing materials.

The event was held in the board room at the brand new Enterprise@Freebrough centre and was arranged during a meeting between Enterprise@Freebrough staff and UK Steel Enterprise to discuss employer engagement.

Simon Hamilton, Regional Manager, UK Steel Enterprise said “Peter and I were very impressed at the calibre of the students’ presentations and we are delighted to be able to provide funding to help these businesses start on their road to success.”

Amid fierce competition the successful bids came from:

Codie Henderson (Beauty Princess) £851
David Anderson (Shop n Stop) £145
Siobhan Brown and Jessica Stevens (Nothing but Baskets) £350
Emily Curnow, Stacey Caley and Caitlin Flannigan (Enterprise 4 U) £450

Kelly Britton, Freebrough Business and Enterprise Manager, was rightly proud of their achievements: “The support from UK Steel Enterprise is invaluable as it allows our students the real life experience of pitching for actual business investment, to people who support business start-up and help individuals become self-employed. This is just the beginning of our students’ journey to setting up their own enterprises and I am delighted with the support they are receiving.”
