Attendance
Attendance at Freebrough Academy is a priority for everyone.
Statistics show that the students who secure the best grades and go on to achieve places in further education and employment are those who attend in excess of 95% of the time. Any absences must be reported to the Academy on 01287 676305 on the first day of absence. The law requires any unexplained absences to be recorded as unauthorised.

Did you know…
There are only four legitimate reasons for absence from school:
- Religious observance
- Illness of the child
- The death of a close family member
- An urgent medical or dental appointment
90% attendance is the equivalent of missing half a day of school every week. Taken across a whole school year, it is the equivalent of 4 whole weeks of lessons missed. If a student has 90% attendance over their 5 years at secondary school, it is the equivalent of half a whole school year missed.
There is a strong correlation between the amount of absence from school and the qualifications that students achieve.
Research suggests that 90% attendance is the equivalent of one GCSE grade drop in achievement.
A young person with no qualifications can expect to earn £7.44 per hour. A graduate will be able to earn over £15 an hour.
Freebrough Academy’s target for all students is at least 95% attendance.

If you have any concerns about your child’s attendance, you can discuss these at any time with our Attendance Team:
Miss Hollinshead
Miss Hollinshead is the Attendance Officer at Freebrough Academy. She is responsible for monitoring overall attendance at the Academy, and using the information to develop strategies to improve the attendance of individual students.
Mrs Henderson
Mrs Henderson is the Attendance Assistant who is responsible for the day to day attendance of individual students. Parents/carers should contact Mrs Henderson if their child is absent from school. If no contact is made, she will phone parents to enquire as to the reason for the student’s absence, and to find out when they will return to school.
