At KS3 students follow an enriched curriculum that includes exciting and fulfilling schemes of work; giving them access to a broad and balanced experience through looking at different dance styles and techniques using a variety of stimuli. All schemes of work link directly to the Physical Education National Curriculum Specification. Areas of study include the following:

  • Exploring the use of basic choreographic devices and the creation of shape and form.
  • Developing movement motifs and structuring dance pieces based around themes.
  • Learning complex movement material and contact work.

In year 8 students receive dance lessons on a rotation with all other arts subjects (this is done in a carousel style format). In year 9 students receive weekly hour long lessons of dance. The following topics are studied;

Within Dance lessons and courses students will:

  • Perform extracts of professional dances
  • Have the opportunity to perform various audiences
  • Attend specialist workshops led by professionals
  • Have the opportunity to watch live performances by professional dance companies
  • Study professional dance work both practically and theoretically
  • Develop both appreciation and evaluation skills
