Business and Enterprise and French

Welcome to Business and Enterprise at Freebrough Academy

Business and Enterprise is the specialism within the Academy and underpins the development of our students in all that they do. Having a ‘can do’ attitude and entrepreneurial spirit is important for our students as they progress through the Academy, post 16 and into the world of work. Combining these skills with more traditional subjects will ensure that our students are best equipped to succeed in their chosen career. All students within the Academy will have the opportunity to study Business and Enterprise as this is a core subject.

We are very proud to be the North East Regional Hub for the Peter Jones Enterprise Academy. This means that all of our students are given the opportunity to work with local and national business people and plan their own business idea.

The Business and Enterprise faculty also includes Modern Foreign Languages and Project Based Learning.

Business and Enterprise

In KS3 (Years 7 and 8) students are given the opportunity to develop their enterprise skills and entrepreneurial acumen through an exciting and engaging curriculum called Kickstart. Each topic is introduced through a driving question or big picture and allows the students to gain knowledge and understanding that will prepare them for KS4. Topics investigated include:

  • Who wants to be an entrepreneur?
  • Social Enterprise
  • Financial literacy and money sense
  • Stocks and shares
  • Business structures
  • Recruitment and careers

In KS4 (Years 9, 10 and 11) students study a Level 2 BTEC qualification. Year 9, 10 and 11 (from June 2013) students are studying BTEC Enterprise and Entrepreneurship, a specialist qualification developed by the Peter Jones Enterprise Academy. Our students are the first students in the country to study this qualification pre 16. Each student learns about how to set up their own business and will complete the qualification by pitching their own business idea. Students are able to then progress on to the Level 3 qualification at our Post 16 Enterprise Centre.

Students in Year 11 (2012-13) are studying BTEC Business. Through this curriculum the students look in depth at topics such as financial forecasting, business purpose and working in business teams.
