Humanities
The Humanities Experience at Freebrough Academy
We believe that all students have the ability and right to succeed. Humanities is all about the world around us and how we interact with it. Humanities is real, it’s on your doorstep, in your newspapers, on the TV, and this is what we aim to bring to young people’s learning experience. Nothing in our world happens in isolation so integration and interdependency are key themes in the curriculum. We believe that learning happens not just in the classroom but also in the wider world and aim to bring that to the young people during key stage 3 and 4. Each unit has a ‘big experience’ built in that students can assess to enhance learning, as well as an extended homework project which develops their skills as independent learners.
Welcome to Key Stage 3 Humanities!
Students in year 7 and 8 all follow a curriculum of Integrated Humanities, this covers the subjects of History, Geography, RE, PSE and Citizenship. During Year 9 some students will continue with Humanities and some students will follow courses in separate subjects. The progress of students is tracked using curriculum levels and effort grades.

Welcome to Key Stage 4 Humanities!
During Key Stage 4 students study a variety of core and optional courses at both level 1 and 2. These are chosen to enable a variety of learning styles so that students can personalise their curriculum.
Students Pop into Parliament
In January a group of 14 humanities students and two staff set of by train to visit London. The purpose of the trip was to visit Parliament and look at how the Government works. Whilst there the students also enjoyed a question and answer session with our local MP, Tom Blenkinsop.
After visiting Parliament the group took a boat cruise along the river Thames looking at some of the historic buildings and learning a little more about the history of our capital city. Following the river cruise the students enjoyed a ride on the London eye taking in a panoramic view of London. They also visited the Natural History Museum, Imperial War Museum, Trafalgar Square and Covent Garden.
Evening entertainment on the three day trip included a trip to the theatre to see Shrek the musical and visit to the cinema.
Trip organiser, Mrs Garbutt, said: “The students really enjoyed the tour of Parliament and they also witnessed the procession of the speaker of the house of commons. Shrek the musical was also a real hit with the group! When we returned home on the Friday evening we were all extremely tired but very happy!”
