At Freebrough Academy we are committed to developing and delivering a high quality offer to young people. Our Post16@Freebrough provision within our state of the art enterprise centre is situated in the heart of East Cleveland.
Post16@Freebrough offers a focused range of courses for 100 students, centred on our specialisms of business and enterprise and engineering with a focus on the key areas of growth in the Tees Valley over the next 10 to 15 years. Our status as a regional hub for the Peter Jones Enterprise Academy drives our curriculum offer and the opportunities available to our students and our partner organisations.
The enterprise centre is central to delivering a high quality education to young people through the creation of a business environment; a place for ‘incubating’ young entrepreneurs in a facility that has a professional, business like feel. Our courses lead to four distinct career pathways; health and social care, engineering, creative media and enterprise and entrepreneurship. Along with associated A level courses our curriculum and accredited routes are designed to support students in a seamless transition to Higher Education, further training and employment.
The environment at Post16@Freebrough instils in students the importance of having the skills, attitudes and approaches required to be successful in the ever changing world of work. Our network of partnerships with our sponsors, colleges and work-related learning providers delivers curriculum choices and personalises learning pathways, as well as providing distinctive and innovative learning experiences.

Our Vision
Our vision is to provide a high quality and innovative Post 16 provision by offering a relevant, varied and personalised curriculum to suit the needs of each individual student.
To achieve this we will encourage your professional creativity by:
-Offering you a personalised learning programme; including challenges, work experience, internships with business partners and setting up your own business

Our Facilities
In December 2012 our new state-of-the-art enterprise centre opened its doors. The new building physically stands alone from the main Academy building but is linked through curriculum, staffing and ethos.
There is a modern café in the centre which serves drinks and light snacks throughout the day. You are also able to access the main Academy restaurant for a more substantial meal at lunchtime.
The centre is equipped with superb ICT facilities including industry standard equipment to provide a realistic work environment as well as powerful workstations, iPads and netbooks.
Facilities to support courses in engineering, health and social care and creative media provide opportunities for you to develop skills, expertise and qualifications in the new and developing industries in the region as well as providing you with the opportunities to seek employment nationally and globally. The centre is also equipped with an industry standard recording studio.
Our incubation pods will give you the space and facilities you require to start your own business from the age of 16. You will be further supported in your business venture by mentors and coaches with a wide range of expertise to help you to become a successful young entrepreneur.
The facilities at the centre and the expertise of our students are used to benefit our wider family of primary and secondary schools and the local community. This means you will have opportunities for real life work experience that will look fantastic on university applications and your CV.

Teaching and Learning
We offer a bespoke learning experience for all of our students.
Partnerships and support from local, national and international businesses are crucial in our delivery of the highest quality learning packages and we have dedicated staff to coordinate employer engagement.
All of our courses are taught in a way that offers a variety of different learning experiences to enhance the traditional teaching element. We integrate vocational and academic courses to open up a wider range of progression routes.
We will ensure that you have experience of relevant work placements, access master classes and attend workshops to further develop your skills and knowledge. We also enhance your overall experience by arranging visits, residential trips and participation in national competitions and challenges.

What will I learn?
A-level Human Biology takes a thematic approach to the subject, looking at principles related to contemporary issues and emphasising factors that affect people’s health and how they interact with their environment.
The specification helps students acquire essential knowledge and develop understanding of concepts in Human Biology and How Science Works.
This qualification will give you one A Level.
You will cover topics such as:
-The body and it’s diseases
-Investigative and practical skills
-Body and cells
How will I be assessed?
There are six units in the specification – three at AS and three at A2 level. Four of the units are assessed by written exam and two units assess investigative and practical skills.
What can I do when I complete the course?
Higher education, degree and professional development programmes within the same or related areas of study, or employment within the health/clinical professions where the Government has identified a significant national skill shortage.
Health and Social Care
Level 2 Extended Certificate (1 Year)
Broadly equivalent to two GCSE grades A-C
Level 3 Extended Diploma (2 Years)
Broadly equivalent to two GCE A Level
What will I learn?
Health and Social Care continues to be one of the largest industries in our area. These courses combine practical, theory and work placements experience to allow you to develop skills and knowledge needed to commence employment within any of the Health and Social care sectors or progress onto higher education.
You will cover topics such as:
- Developing effective communications
-Equality, Diversity and Rights
-Anatomy and Physiology
-Work placement in a health and social care environment
How will I be assessed?
Each unit will be assessed individually with possible award of Pass, Merit and Distinction which make up the whole qualification. It enables learner to gain qualifications at their own pace along flexible routes. Level 2 contains one externally assessed exam.
What can I do when I complete the course?
There are many progression and career opportunities after gaining these qualifications. Level 2 students can progress onto the Level 3 course or gain employment within the Health and Social Care sector.
Level 3 students can progress onto Higher education to complete studies in many Health and Social Care fields including nursing, midwifery, occupational therapy, social work or gain employment within the Health and Social Care sector.
Peter Jones Enterprise Academy Enterprise and Entrepreneurship
Level 3 Diploma (2 Years)
Broadly equivalent to two GCE A Level
What will I learn?
Enterprise@Freebrough is the approved Cleveland Hub for the delivery of the Enterprise and Entrepreneurship qualification through the Peter Jones Enterprise Academy. The qualification helps develop students’ understanding of planning, setting up and running their own business and looks at all the stages needed including actual running of the business. The course is delivered through a combination of teaching, master classes, workshops and placements, and involves interaction with local, national and international businesses. The course is suited to people who are focussed on self-employment or any interested in working in any business environment and can be studied alongside any of the other courses on offer.
You will cover topics such as:
-Business planning and pitching
-Leadership and teamwork
-Operating your business
-Launching your business vision
How will I be assessed?
The framework awards credit for qualifications and units, presenting qualification in a way that is easy to understand and measure. Each unit will be assessed individually with possible award of Pass, Merit and Distinction which make up the whole qualification. It enables learner to gain qualifications at their own pace along flexible routes.
What can I do when I complete the course?
On completion of this course students can progress onto Higher Education to complete level 4 qualifications, continue to run their own business or seek employment within an organisation.
Engineering
Level 3 Diploma (2 Years)
Broadly equivalent to 1.5 GCE A Level
What will I learn?
The engineering sector continues to suffer from a skills gap and needs to keep up with the rapidly developing technologies now available. The BTEC Nationals in Engineering have been designed to give you the underpinning knowledge and specific skills needed to meet the needs of the modern mechanical engineering industries.
Students will study a variety of mandatory units and optional units that will cover a number of areas including;
-Health and Safety
-Mechanical principals
-Engineering project
-Engineering drawing for technicians
How will I be assessed?
The framework awards credit for qualifications and units, presenting qualification in a way that is easy to understand and measure. Each unit will be assessed individually with possible award of Pass, Merit and Distinction which make up the whole qualification. It enables the learner to gain qualifications at their own pace along flexible routes.
What can I do when I complete the course?
The qualification provides progression opportunities to higher education, degree and professional development programmes within the same or related areas of study, within universities and other institutions or employment within the design, engineering or manufacturing industries.
Creative Media Production
Level 3 Diploma (2 Years)
Broadly equivalent to two GCE A Levels
What will I learn?
The creative media industry has grown rapidly over the past ten years and this qualification has been developed to provide vocationally-related education and training for those who are intending to work in the creative media sector. It gives learners the opportunity to develop skills, knowledge and understanding relevant to the media industries in an applied learning context and the opportunity to develop a range of skills and techniques, personal qualities and attitudes essential for successful performance in working life.
You will study units including:
-Understanding the radio industry
-Understanding the computer games industry
-Developing a small business in the creative media industries
-Understanding the Creative Media Sector
How will I be assessed?
The framework awards credit for qualifications and units, presenting qualification in a way that is easy to understand and measure. Each unit will be assessed individually with possible award of Pass, Merit and Distinction which make up the whole qualification. It enables the learner to gain qualifications at their own pace along flexible routes.
What can I do when I complete the course?
There is potential for the qualification to prepare learners for employment in the appropriate vocational sector and it is suitable for those who have decided that they wish to enter a particular area of work. Some learners may wish to gain the qualification in order to progress to a level 4 related programme in higher education.
Product Design
A Level (2 Years)
What will I learn?
This qualification will give you one A level. It has been designed to encourage candidates to take a broad view of design and technology, to develop their capacity to design and make products and to appreciate the complex relations between design, materials, manufacture and marketing. This course would be beneficial to students currently studying or who have an interest in engineering, resistant materials or graphic design.
The units to be covered are:
-Materials, components and application
-Learning through designing and making
-Design and manufacture
-Design and making practice
How will I be assessed?
This course is assessed through two centre assessed elements and two external examinations.
What can I do when I complete the course?
The qualification provides progression opportunities to higher education, degree and professional development programmes within the same or related areas of study, within universities and other institutions or employment within the design, engineering or manufacturing industries.
Maths
A Level (2 years)
What will I learn?
You will:
-Develop your understanding of mathematics and mathematical processes in an enjoyable way that promotes confidence
-Develop abilities to reason logically and recognise incorrect reasoning, to generalise and to construct mathematical proofs
-Extend your range of mathematical skills and techniques and use them in more difficult, unstructured problems
-Develop an understanding of coherence and progression in mathematics and of how different areas of mathematics can be connected
-Learn to recognise how a situation may be represented mathematically and understand the relationship between ‘real-world’ problems and mathematics
-Learn to use mathematics as an effective means of communication
-Learn to read and understand mathematical arguments and articles concerning applications of mathematics
-Acquire the skills needed to use technology such as calculators and computers effectively, recognise when such use may be inappropriate and be aware of limitations
-Develop an awareness of the relevance of mathematics to other fields of study, to the world of work and to society in general
-Topics covered include Algebra and functions; coordinate geometry in the (x, y) plane; sequences and series; differentiation and integration.
How will I be assessed?
There are a total of six units from the specification to be covered – three at AS level and three at A2. These are assessed by exam.
What can I do when I complete the course?
Once you complete the course you can move on to higher education, study for a degree or apply for employment in a range of fields.

Enrichment
To support and enhance your studies we offer a varied enrichment programme for you to take part in.

Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme
We are experienced providers of the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme and you will be able to work towards your bronze, silver and gold awards alongside your studies. D of E will give you the opportunity to enjoy new experiences, discover hidden talents and learn new skills. The awards are recognised and valued by employers and higher education providers and by taking part you will be making a difference to other people and your community, be fitter and healthier, make new friends and have memories to last you a lifetime.
Humanutopia Heroes Programme
As one of our Post 16 students you will have the opportunity to join, or continue on, ‘The Heroes Journey’. This programme will see you develop many essential life skills and become a role model for others. Our current team of Heroes have so far attended additional Humanutopia training sessions, worked with younger students within the Academy and gone out to local primary schools to work with key stage one and two children.
Work Placements
Each course will include periods of work placement related to the subject you are studying. This will enable you to gain valuable real life skills for your future career.
Local and National Challenges
Throughout your studies you will take part in local and national challenges and competitions relating to your course. These will enable you to develop your employability skills and build relationships with a range of businesses.
Wider Key Skills
During your time at Post16@ Freebrough you may be given the opportunity to study for a Wider Key Skills qualification at level two or three. These courses are very effective in developing your teamwork and leadership skills.

Career Guidance
Routes 2 Employment and Post 16@Freebrough will work together to make sure that you are given the very best advice to help you make the right career choices for your future. You will also be given many opportunities to take on voluntary roles and work experience.
We were awarded the Investors in Careers award in July 2014 for the level of work that we do to ensure that our students are given quality, impartial careers advice and guidance.
Learning Support
We have an experienced team of Learning Mentors and Learning Support Assistants who are available to support your learning.
Time 4 You School Counselling Service
We all need a bit of extra support sometimes and that is where Time 4 You School Counselling Service can help.
Time 4 You are based at Freebrough and offer professionally qualified counsellors who can help you with a range of issues. Don’t be afraid to contact them if you need support.
Financial Support
Bursaries are available, depending on your financial position. If you are experiencing financial difficulties which are preventing you from joining or continuing on your course please speak to the Director of Post 16 who may be able to help.
Transport
The Academy is well served by public transport and you may be eligible for a reduced cost bus pass.
Currently the students who attend Enterprise @ Freebrough (the 16 to 19 year provision on the Freebrough Academy campus) are able to apply for a RAT card (Roaming and Travelling card) from Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council, Transport & Environment Section at a cost of £25 per eligible student.
Currently the cost of the RAT card is subsidised by Enterprise @ Freebrough.
The criteria to be met to enable students to apply for a RAT card and access Arriva transport are:
-One application per student who must live a minimum of 3 miles from place of education
-Must be 16 – 19 years of age (students have attained the age of eighteen years on 31st August preceding their last year of study)
-£25 payable per academic year (£10 by Enterprise@Freebrough and £15 by student), which entitles each young person to 1/2 price bus fares on any journey
-Photograph ID is required
